Strategic site, perched 697 m above sea level on Mont Ardu, the castle of Puilaurens stands on its rocky outcrop overlooking the village in the middle of a pine forest. It was for 4 centuries, the southernmost fortress in France blocking access to the Fenouillèdes. It testifies to a unique model of fortifications commanded by a central stronghold, the City of Carcassonne to defend a territory and the border with the kingdom of Aragon in the 13th. The adaptation of this fortress to the steep relief demonstrates the architectural prowess. It constitutes an impressive visual landmark in remarkable and preserved landscapes. From reception, the first stones are revealed! At the end of the path, the impressive chicane staircase rises, then the entrance door of the castle. After the knockout door, the main courtyard is revealed. The surrounding wall and its battlements, the towers open to the gorge are steeped in history. Last visit 20 minutes before closing.
