  • Wednesday April 22 at 5 p.m .: "German Expressionism" From 1912, the term "expressionism", which had hitherto been used to designate Fauvism in France, is used in Germany to designate the use by artists of 'a violent chromaticism. These artists are mainly grouped around two movements: Die Brücke ("The Bridge"), in Dresden then in Berlin, and Der Blaue Reiter ("The Blue Rider"), in Munich. Within Die Brücke, artists such as Kirchner, Pechstein, Nolde, seek to rediscover what characterizes the creations of primitive peoples, the expression of strength and life in their most basic form, as well as harmony with nature. . Kandinsky, Marc and Jawlensky, founders of Der Blau Reiter, insert their chromatic compositions in a more constructed, more controlled system, showing very early on a tendency to abstraction. The First World War, to which the mobilized artists initially attribute positive forces before becoming disillusioned, dispersed these creators in a new way of painting.
