  • France can be proud of having had a great singing school of which Sophie Koch is the worthy heiress: it has performed on all the major stages of the world, Covent Garden in London, Metropolitan Opera of New York, Staatsoper of Vienna, Paris Opera… Mezzo-soprano with an eclectic repertoire, she shines in the works of Strauss, Wagner, Mozart, Glück without forgetting the French heritage which she fervently defends. She does not content herself with singing in well-known works like the Damnation of Faust by Berlioz, she reveals to the general public an opera little performed like Le Roi Arthus de Chausson. She has just had a triumph after a magnificent performance at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse in Ariane et Barbe Bleue by Dukas. A generous personality whose motto could be “serve the work and not yourself”, Sophie Koch also wants to share the experience of the young generations. Professor at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels, she agreed to participate alongside José Van Dam in masterclasses within the framework of the International Academy of French Music created by Michel Plasson. We thank her for coming to Carcassonne to present a quartet of singers chosen from among her students who already have a foothold in their careers. Through extracts from works by Jacques Offenbach ranging from La Grande-duchesse de Gerolstein to La Vie Parisienne, via La Belle Hélène, Orphée aux Enfers and La Périchole, they will give us a taste of the joy of living in music.
