In 1846, the Belgian Adolphe Sax filed a patent for a new instrument to which he gave his name: the saxophone. Very quickly adopted by Hector Berlioz and other composers, it was then neglected and remained for a long time confined to military music and harmonies. The saxophone had to wait until the beginning of the 20th century to find classical music and its great repertoire thanks to composers like Darius Milhaud, Georges Bizet or Maurice Ravel in his famous Boléro. Very popular instrument, it is the heyday of small ensembles, in particular the quartet, for which many composers have written a very rich repertoire. The Ysae Quartet was formed in 2017, it brings together young artists from the upper classes of the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse. Introduced to the practice of the quartet by Philippe Lecocq, they are eager to discover all the facets of their instrument by mixing the classical repertoire of the saxophone and string quartet transcriptions: their training has already been rewarded with a first prize at the International Competition. of Carquefou in April 2019. The program presented in Carcassonne makes it possible to express what music can convey: from the profound “Recollection” of Ernest Bloch to the typical rhythms of popular Venezuelan music by Aldemaro Romero.
