UN SOIR À VIENNE

Concert at Carcassonne

In the collective imagination, Vienna is the world capital of music. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler and many others, Viennese by birth or adoption, have written their finest pages there. 1817, still a student at the Conservatory of Vienna, Schubert, with a very Mozartian grace and a quiet lyricism, launches into the writing of a first trio unfortunately remained unfinished. 1819 despite the popular success of his lied Die Forelle (La Truite), Schubert remained confined to his circle of Viennese friends: only one composer counted, leaving the others in the shade: Beethoven. A friend, Sylvester Paumgartner, enlightened music lover, amateur cellist, invites Schubert to come and spend the summer in Steyr, his summer residence. These are moments of happiness from which springs, thanks to the insistence of its host, the first draft of what will later become the Piano Quintet, D 667. The fourth movement takes up in variations the famous theme of La Truite, hence its name. Mahler's Piano Quartet, Mahler's only chamber music work, completes the Viennese character of the program prepared by the musicians of the Orchester National du Capitole de Toulouse who, apart from their symphonic activity, are keen to share with friends , and with the public, the privileged happiness of chamber music.
